Nantyr Speaks

On December 2, 2019, Nantyr students had the opportunity to participate in the first ever public speaking competition. There were two categories who competed, from grades 9 to 10, and 11 to 12.

The students wrote a three to five minute speech related to one of the three different categories- environment, social justice and humanity.

There was a variety of different speeches that came out, such as mental health awareness, the agriculture industry, LGBTQ rights, and feminine product pricing.

A timekeeper as well as three judges were present, and they were marking on oral communication, such as organization, speaking without hesitation, tone and clarity of voice, and evidence.

They were also looking at non verbal communication, such as engagement, mannerisms and poise, and gestures. The marks were out of 40, and some marks got taken off if the speech were to go under or over time.

The winner of the intermediate competition was Veronica Moore, with her speech on ‘We Should Eat the Rich’. The winner of the senior competition was Nicholas Mooney, with his speech on ‘Living With Anxiety’.
